Celebrating Black History Month 2022

Did you know that the concept and practice of vaccination came to Europe and the American colonies through people from West Africa? When the people of West Africa were enslaved by white colonists, they brought their knowledge and practice of vaccination with them. An outbreak of smallpox was contained in part by many American colonists adopting the practice of vaccination. Some of these colonists included John and Abigail Adams (and their children) and George Washington (who insisted that the army under his command be vaccinated against smallpox.)
